Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay

We've been working on an essay that asks you to describe how you can celebrate the principles and steps toward nonviolence that were practiced and taught by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Your homework this week is to reflect on the process of writing this essay. Your response should be in the form of at least one well-developed paragraph. You can choose to focus on the planning process, the actual drafting of the essay, or the thinking that you generated around the topic. This shouldn't be a copy of the essay, but rather your thoughts about how you approached the assignment and/or the topic.

  6. when I frist read thougt that this was a boring topic because I heard so many of Dr.king Jr. Then I that realze that his principle was great, and his steps went right along to his principles. One of his principle I liked or thought it was intersting like one of his princple say that (THE BELOVED COMMUNITY IS A WORLD OF PEACE WITH JUSTICE), and I thought that it meant that violent isn't peaceful.

  8. I approached the assignment of this essay, "How Can You Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. All Year Long?", by coming up to an answer to that question. I came up with, you can celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. all year long by not using violence to get peaceful ends. Then I looked through the packet that we got and found two principles and steps that go along with my answer. I seperated them into paragraphs, answer to the question, principles, and steps. I also came up with the idea to use one example but just to build on it, and apply the principles and steps to the situation of the characters throughout the text. In the conclusion those characters ended up making a compromise to their argument without using violence that way they were both happy and no one was hurt phyiscally or emotionally.

  9. (Indent here) I think I did pretty well on the essay. Starting with the drafting part, it took some time, but right now I'm on the final. I KNOW I did the essay right, but it seems short, though it could be long. Should I extend? I think so, but it's like choosing between getting a 99 or getting a 100 on a quiz. There both good, and not too short compared to exact is good too, I guess...

  10. I believe that people should use Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as a roll model. I think that people should use and Incorporate his steps and Principals of nonviolence in their everyday life. Nonviolence is a peaceful thing and it will not use violence to achieve peaceful ends; (as stated in Dr. Kings second principal of nonviolence.) Dr. King believed in peace and kindness; this is something we should all believe.

  11. When I started my essay, I started by reading the steps and principles of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Then I decided which steps and princples I would do. I chose steps and principles that I can relate to. Next I put my thoughts on paper. I tried to express how important these steps were to daily life. After that, I had to organize my thoughts into paragraphs. Then I revised my work to see if it made sense. Finally I typed my final copy.

  12. What I did to write my essay was I chose two principles and put them in a paragraph. The principles that I chose were principles one and five. Then I chose steps one and five and made them into another paragraph. That was my body. Then I just added ways that we can celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. using those principles and steps and an introduction and conclusion discussing the general idea of the essay and I was finished drafting.

  13. What generated ideas for me to write this essay is, when we are going over the paper with all the topics to write about, I wrote notes on the side that evenually formed into sentences in my essay. I though about all the bullets on the paper and how I could put it all into my own words and how I would think about the topics in my head. This helped me write almost the whole essay.
What also helped me to write the essay was to think about the things I already knew about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and put them into my essay. I have written alot of things about Martin Luther King before and have read alot about him! Having backround information really helps while writing because you can add in some of the stories you hear about this whole problem back then. It also helps you understand what you are writing about more.

  14. What came to my mind when I thought about the topic of the essay was the equal rights Dr. King helped us acheive. So what i tried to focus on while writing this essay was how he did good for all people and we should appriciate it and remember what Dr. King did for us.

  15. I think I did this wrong yesterday so here is my new one-- What I thought of when I was writing my essay was that there are not many people in the world that realy care. They don't actualy relize what Dr. King did for us. So in my essay I tried to send a message telling people to remember Dr. Kings principals and steps of nonviolence in their every day life. This could posibly lead to a less violent and more kind world.

  16. something that came to mind when i thought about this topic was that Martin Luther King was a man that made a big difference. He was very important.

  17. When we started this essay on Friday, I had the gang awareness program. So I just typed it without a draft, and when I got home that night I started the essay. I got off to a good start with good thinking then I got writers block. Then after I sat to think I developed more and more ways to fraise my ideas into the essay. I thought of how being nonviolence is not being a coward, it was the right way to help people.

  18. I honestly just began to write and to continue, I didn't plan it and I didn't use my packet. Though I still think that the essay came out pretty good. I had thought of how important he was but kept thinking Christopher Columbus. (people in Mr.Butterfield's class should know)
I then typed while editing it, I was pretty far behind. So honestly, I didn't really think about it, I just rushed through it. I know it's bad though.

    Sorry Mrs.Puccio

  19. as I was writing my essay about Martin Luther King I thought it was going to be very interesting. As I was writing my essay I was using the paper you gave us about him as a guide. I thought how I could incorperate some of the words on the paper into my own words in my rough copy. In my acctual copy I like to think of new ideas as I write the essay and since we used the computer it help me with most of my mistakes. I thought in the final copy of things i already new about Martin Luther King to make it seem better. Also everytime I wrote a principle or step that Martin Luther King created I made a sentence on how i have related to that principle/step. The information I already new and the information you gave us really helped me know more about what I was writing about. :)

  20. When i started writing my essay, i thought it was going to be really hard. I forgot everything i knew about him. When i kept reading his principals, and his steps to nonviolence, i started to get ideas in my head about what i should write. At the end i realized that was so easy.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The actual drafting on this essay was easy but hard. It was easy because the basic topic was somthing I studied about. But the hard part was trying to put in enough words. I had to keep loking over everything and was always searching for more and more areas to put more details. This is what I thought about the actual drafting of the essay.

  22. When I was told I had to write an essay my natural instinct was to say "aw man!". But then I heard about all the different steps and principals to choose from. It was like a spark went off in my head, so many great ideas came to my mind. For my essay format I decided to pick two principles and two steps that I thought were most important. Then I just thought of a good intro and ending.

  23. When i was told i had to write an essay, I thought it was going to be really tricky. I tried to focus on all the good he did for us. I focused on how we should appreciate what he did for us and how he was a great person.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I approached the situation of the essay by first looking through the topics and figuring out a good way to start. Then I picked three principles and picked a step to help you accomplish those steps and what I thought those steps meant. I then added a conclusion I thought would fit

    ReplyDelete
  25. I thought at first that this essay would be really hard. After we read the princples and steps that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had about nonviolence, I thought it would be easier. While the teacher was reading it through, I was taking notes to make it easier for myself. After I did that the essay seemed really easy to write and great ideas were just coming up to me. I picked the two princeples and two steps that seemed the best of all.

  26. I approached this essay about Martin Luther King by. thinking about how to plan my righting so for example like I had to list to principles’ in my body of my essay and to steps he used to achieve his goals, and how to make my main question why Martin Luther King should be celebrated more than once a year? Be answered in the body and conclusion about how and why I should celebrate him more than once every year. But the main thing I thought about throughout this essay was about why and how he was such a big inspirational person I gave ideas and examples throughout my essay which was backed up with my conclusion at the end and used for my closing sentence.

  27. First when i thought i had to do this essay. I started thinking of a idea i could write about, well i decided to say we can selebrate martin luther king jr by making a pledge of alligence that includes all the stuff he did for our country and i added the stuff we can do to to make the nonviolence better and in the rest of my paragraphs i did the same thing but with different principals and it turn out being easy.Oh and conclusio.

  28. When I found out i had to write an essay about Martin Luther King Jr. I thought it was going to be hard. I thought I was going to fail the essay becuase I dont really know alot about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. When i read the packet with so much information about Martin Luther King Jr and what he believed in I started to come up with a bunch of ideas for the essay using the information from the packet and the little information I know about Martin Luther King Jr.

  29. *REDOING ASSIGNMENT*
When I got the essay assignment, it hit me: I know a lot about Martin Luther King Jr., and I knew what he did, so I thought it would be a breeze. I was wrong. I had two principles and two steps I had to choose. I didn't know what'd be best, but I selected all four things I needed.
As I was writing the draft, well, I couldn't think of what to write. I made an introduction, but I thought:
What do I do know? I can't think of a thing and I don't want to miss the deadline.

All I came up with was a single page in my journal, and the fact I HAD to double space my final copy makes me feel like I didn't do anything.

Though I wrote the essay, it wasn't what I expected...

  30. The thinking that I did for the essay was a bit easy. Once I start writing, I know what I will do next. When I get up to the beginning of a new paragraph it becomes a bit challenging. I never know how to start off my paragraph. It is kind of annoying because I sit there trying to think of something good to start off with. But, once something pops into my brain again, I start writing like always again.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I thought the essay was difficult because I had to use the 6 steps and 6 principle of non-violence and apply it to my life. It's easy to talk about non-violence but it is very difficult to write an assinment. It isn't easy to come to a peacfull solution in a volent situation. Learning ways to defuse a situation takes practice and doesn't always seem like the easier thing to do but in the end you would always is the better thing to do.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Somehow I tried all my best to take Mrs. C's advice on putting the nonviolence rules and principles in two different paragraphs. When I started to write I didn't feel like writing them altogether in two paragraphs (it kind of confused me that way) for the four objectives that I wrote. So the way I wrote the essay was an opening paragraph, then two "bodies", and a closing paragraph. (this is my redo of the homework(sorry)) And f.y.i you spell phrase like "phone" I just thought to add on. I used two principals and two rules for my essay (sorry about my such big font!):

    ReplyDelete
  33. To start drafting my essay I picked the topics, How Dr.King prepared to speak to a group and how Dr.King prevented violence. Then I picked the steps relating to them and wrote my introduction. Then Istarted with the first body paragragh on how he prepared to speak to a group and then some details and examples. I did the same for the paragragh on how he prevented violence. In the conclusion I wrote some details simalar to the ones in the introduction.

  34. Martin Luther King Jr ( Dr. ) is a very inportant person in history because he is the person who brought segergation to an end in this world. When i started this essay i was about to pull the hair out of my head then i relized what he did with all the speeches and how he speeched about segregation and how it was not fair to African Americans in United States.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I generated ideas by looking at the pages on the packet and took some notes on how I was going to develop my essay. I also had some background knowledge from books, pictures, and other essays about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an I added the information into my essay. In each paragraph I tried to incorporate one step or principle. Then when I was at home I looked up his speech on the computer. His words gave me some inspirations. So that is how I wrote about Dr Martin Luther KIng Jr. in my essay.

  36. When I heard that I have to write an essay on Dr. Martin I was so nervous, because I didn`t knew much about Dr.Martin and I was not familiar to him . But when I heard that there were five principles and five steps about Dr. Martin non-violence and we have to write only two principles and two steps and some thhings about him.It was too easy and when I started writing I kept writing and my essay was like 200 words something but I made it smaller by making the words smaller by their size while typing.

  37. Before I started the Martin Luther King essay I thought it would be a fun thing to do it class. when I was reading the packet you handed me I was seeing witch two princibals to write with. I picked the two that I had things in common with, like standing up for what is right or never lose hope in what you do. I also did the same with the steps, I tryed to find something in common with the steps.

  38. When I wrote the essay about Martin Luther King Jr., it was a little bit difficult but then when I got into it, it wasnt that hard. When I was writing the principals and steps, it just popped in my head and got me to keep going. When I was done, I felt proud.=)

  39. As I was planning the essay about Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, I thought about what should be included. With as thesis of "We can celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Junior in many ways", I came up with using 2 of his steps, and 2 of his principles to back up my full thoughts in each paragraph. I planned ahead, and knew exactly what i was doing. To me, it was clearly a easy assignment with some thinking and purpose

  40. When we wrote the Dr.king writtinb i thought it was going to be so hard and i wasn't going to finish it butonce i picked 2 princeples and step, once i wrote something down i got more and more ideas and i ended up finishing it andd it wasn't that hard afterall.

  42. When I approached this essay, I figured it would be really boring. But, once I'd chosen my two steps and two principles, I changed my mind. I find it hard to write about history, but nonviolence is something you can apply to everyday life, and I now think that it is a very important life lesson. Before I'd drafted my essay, however, I first thought about various examples of the steps and principles that I'd chosen. Then I began to draft, using details from the packet and my brain to add to the essay.

  43. When I recieved the packet you gave us, with the six principles and six steps , I started getting very confused on what exactly we had to do . I thought we were going to write a biography about Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. ,but as we read the packet as a class it started to make sence .What helped me in writting my essay was I looked up information on a computer and it definitely helped. By writting this essay I learned that violence is never the answer.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I approached this essay by answering the question: How do we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his values all year long? I came up with, don't use violence for an outcome of a peaceful ending. Then I looked through the packet that we recieved in class to see if two steps and two principles that would go along with my answer. I also put the paragraoh in sections by: the 2 steps, the 2 principles and the answer to my question was included in my introductory paragraph.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The Martin Luther King Jr essay was fun to write because I love to write and when we wrote about martin luther king I was happy to here that we were writting about him because he is one of my heros and i m proud of what i wrote.

  46. When you gave us the assignment I was like wow this was going to be hard. But once I got my thoughts about what I was going to write about on paper and prewrite it, it was all smooth sailing from then I knew it was not going to as hard as I thought it was going to be.

  47. when i was first handed the essay assignment i thought "just great". i had no backround knoweledge of Martin Luther King what so ever. but once i read through the packet with the 6 principles and steps he followed and used, i began to feel more confident about this essay. And when we had to hand it in, i was proud of my work and what i wrote.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Planning this essay on what to write was a little difficult beacuse I didnt know what to write.Once I figured out to write I could just keep writing. I just thought about what Martin Luther king jr. did for people. Then that helped me write the rest of my essay.

  49. when I started to write this essay I was very confused with the vocabulary and I thought I really couldn’t do this by myself but once I read a it over and over again i began to comprehend it and understand its actually really important to be like martin Luther king all year long.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think that this essay was alot like a DBQ. by reading the packet you saw how all you had to do was take the bullets from the principals and steps to nonviolence and apply them to your essay. How I learned to do DBQ's really helped me figure out what to put in the essay.By really just plugging the info into and essay form.

  51. When I first got the assignment I looked at the packet that I received
and thought about what I was supposed to do ( "How can we use dr kings principles and steps all year long).I looked through and picked the two principles and the two steps that I would use a lot to solve things nonviolently. From there I just organized my essay so there was an intro paragraph. Then there was 2 body paragraphs and an ending paragraph. Thats how I planned my essay.

    ReplyDelete
  52. First, before writing my essay I thought of a question, how can we celebrate Dr.King year round? Then I looked at the packet we received and I found some ideas and some six principles and steps to back up the ideas I had. Next I made a chart that said my ideas for each paragraph. Finally, I was done with the process of writing my essay I found that writing the essay turned out to be really easy and I was done!

  53. I approached this essay by first looking at the packets and choosing the principles and steps I wanted to use. I chose them by seeing which ones could relate to me the most. After that I wrote a paragraph on principles and steps .In those paragraphs I gave examples of how we could use these principles and steps to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his principles and steps.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I thought that this was a little hard. But I think that writing this essay was interesting because his principles tell what he liked and disliked. I agree with half of his principles.

    ReplyDelete
  55. What generated my ideas about the essay was the packet and the notes I wrote on the side of most of the principles and steps. The notes really helped me plan and write my essay which I thought came out really good and I'm not much of an essay writer so I was really surprised how easy it was with the notes and ideas I had jotted down. Also what helped me alot is thinking about why we celebrate Dr.King's birthday each year in February and what he did to change the U.S. After alot of thought and drafting I finally had one of the best essays I have ever written.

    ReplyDelete
  56. The way I prepared my essay was by reading Martin Luther King Jr. 's steps and principles of nonviolence. I then reviewed the notes that I wrote on the side of my paper in class and the important text to me that I underlined. Then I picked out two of his steps and two of his principles that I thought had the most meaning and were the most important to me. I used these principles and steps to write my essay and showed my own examples and thoughts in my essay.

    ReplyDelete
  57. When I approached my essay, this was the first thing that popped into my head what principles would go well with what I know about Dr. King I thought about it and I knew Dr King thought you should never solve a problem with violence, you talk it out . Then I thought about another principle Dr. King also thought that violence had complete disrespect for non-violence he thought that violence never resolved a problem between other people it just make the problem worse. Those were my two principles. Then I thought what steps could I use. I looked on my paper, the two I knew the most about were Dr King believed in listening to other and respecting their opinons no matter what skin color they have. The other step I had used was you should take the responsibilty for your actions do not blame what you did on someone else. I enjoyed writing this essay

  59. I think that dr. martin luther king jr. Was one of our most important leaders. The way we can celebrate him on our every day life is incorprate his priciplas and steps into our action and the things we do.

  60. When I was told I had to write an essay I thought it would be really boring. After a couple days of thinking about it. I was really excited to write about Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. And to explain to people a couple of his steps and principles. I think I can reflect on this because I agree with Dr.Martin Luther King that we all should be treated equaly. Also in myessay I really wanted to discuss why Dr.Martin Luther King should be celebreated year round across the united states. To evaluate the two steps and principles I wrote about , split each step and principle into a paragraph with bold letters to bring attention to those words.

  62. The essay on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I didn't know what to do at first. As I read the packet I started to understand it more. So this is how I did my essay. I started off by picking 2 principles and 2 steps that I could relate to in my everyday life. On a piece of paper I wrote down some examples about the steps and principles that I picked. Then after I was done with drafting it, it became easier to put it into an essay. I wrote up the introduction and then I wrote up the paragraphs about the steps and principles that I picked. Finally I wrote the conclusion and I was done. This essay I thought would be hard to write but it turned out to be easy.

  63. Since I'm very bad with contest-involved essays, I'm sure I rushed through this thing. It was just a normal, mediocore (not sure if I spelled that right) 8 paragraph essay. If you think about it, I would've worked on it until 2036. I just put things from the packet in my own words. But look, it's not your fault.

When I was writing my Martin Luther King Jr. essay I i started by reading the packed we got. I put side notes on the things I was going to use so it would be easier. Then I looked at the first question it said on the front "How can we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. all year long?" I thought about this and then I thought about what else i had to in cooperate into the essay. So I thought we can celebrate him all the time by using and following his steps and principles to nonviolence. After that I just used my side notes and before I knew it i finished the essay!

  66. I have always hated essays and always been terible at them so when I heard that we had to write an essay on Martin Luther King Jr. I said
"uh oh". I know alot about Martin Luther King Jr. about how he was a great person who fought for his race's rights. I thought the essay was going to be esay but it was not. I thought about the things that Martin Luther King Jr. would never do like use violence to solve problems and he believed that using violence wouldn't get you anywhere. I think that if all people would follow those two of Martin Luther King Jr.'s thoughts the world would be a much better place.

  67. I first aproached the Dr. Martin Luther King essay by creating an outline. I like to set up an outline before I start writing to have a clear understanding of what im supposed to do. Then I read through the packet to see what steps and principles Iwas going to use. I based it on peace and how he used nonviolence.Ten I peaced it together and made 5 paragraphs.

  71. I think that Dr. Martin Luther King Junoir was important because of his famous speech "I Have A Dream". In that speech he stopped racism. He made people realize that racism was not a good thing. He wanted people to be treated equally and not differently. He wanted freedom for the world and for it to be a free country.
